Dr. Vincent Monastra: Strategies for Engaging
                                                               the Child with ADHD

There are several mysteries about students with ADHD that are evident to educators. The first is that these students are easily distracted during instruction or when asked to complete class assignments but seem perfectly capable of paying sustained attention to things that interest them. The second is that gentle reminders and redirection will result in improved effort by most students, but fail to produce any sustained change in these children. The third is that "motivational" strategies like behavioral charting, use of negative reinforcement (e.g. taking away recess), and positive reinforcement (e.g. providing tangible rewards for completing tasks) may work with most children but seem to have little sustained impact on these children or may actually lead to increased aggressive behavior in the classroom. In this workshop, teachers and administrators will learn how to translate an understanding of the neurology of ADHD into practical, easily applied techniques to engage, motivate, encourage, and enhance the ability of children with ADHD to function effectively in classroom settings.

Offered Day 1 only:  Morning and Afternoon sessions are the same and designed for grade K-12 educators.

Dr. Kathleen Budge:  Disrupting Poverty:
                                                 Rules of Engagement for Teachers

Some teachers are more successful with students who live in poverty than others, but what is the difference? Studies show it goes well beyond the curricula selected, teaching strategies employed or quality of the instruction. While all of these factors are important, they are insufficient for explaining the difference.  Key to succeeding with students who live in poverty is the way in which teachers relate to them and engage them in the learning process. In this session, participants will learn some of the “rules of engagement” for connecting to students who live in poverty and how to develop classroom cultures in which both they and their students thrive.

Offered Day 1 — Morning: K-5 — Afternoon: 6-12

Offered Day 2 — Morning: K-5 — Afternoon: 6-12
